Frequently Asked Questions
The following are Frequently Asked Questions as well as answers regarding GEA IPC 4.0.
Q. What is GEA IPC 4.0?
A. GEA IPC 4.0 is a new and improved version of the GE Appliance Illustrated Parts Catalog. This new version replaces the previous version (i.e. Version 3) of the GE Appliance Illustrated Parts Catalog.
Q. Why was this new version created?
A. Version 3 was designed years ago for the Windows 95/98 Operating System. This version has reached its capacity and can no longer support adding new appliance models. The new version, GEA IPC 4.0, is certified for use on Windows 2000/XP and has been designed to support display of an unlimited number of new models.

Q. How do I get GEA IPC 4.0?
A. The GEA IPC 4.0 version replaces your existing IPC program. The DVD contains the new program and all the model data available on your current version. New model data will continue to be sent on an update CD-ROM each month.
Q. What do I do if I don't have a DVD drive on my computer?
A. If your computer does not have a DVD drive, please contact Reed Barber at Technical Publications (reed.barber@ge.com or Tel: 901-387-4013) and a CD-ROM set (1-7) with the new version will be sent to you.
Q. What operating systems will GEA IPC 4.0 run on?
A. GEA IPC 4.0 is certified to run on Windows 2000/XP.
Q. What do I do if I have an older operating system (i.e. Windows 95/98/etc.)?
A. If you’re using an older operating system (Windows 95/98, etc.) and you’re unable to upgrade to a supported Windows platform, please note the final monthly update disk for the old version (April 2007 disk) will remove the expiration date on the program. This will allow you to to continue to preview the data. The final update CD-ROM for version 3 is the #11 December 2007 monthly model disk.
If you cannot use the new program, please contact Reed Barber. You will be refunded the balance of your current subscription cost and be able to use the old version indefinitely, although new model information will not be provided to you. Please note that Help desk support for this outdated version will be very limited. We do appreciate and value your time as a subscriber with us and hope that you consider taking advantage of our new IPC program. Version 4 is available upon request from Reed Barber at Technical Publications (reed.barber@ge.com or Tel: 901-387-4013).
Q. Can I continue to install updates to GEA IPC 3.0?
A. No. All future updates will be for GEA IPC 4.0 only. You must uninstall GEA IPC 3.0 and install GEA IPC 4.0.
Q. Why do we have to install the update CD at each workstation?
A. The update CD has more than model data on the disk. This information must be installed at each machine in order for the application to work properly.
Q. After installing the base program on the server, why can't I copy the content to a folder (from the server) and map/share it to the other workstations instead of installing the application at each workstation?
A. The application was not designed to work that way. You must perform a Viewer install at the workstation(s) once the Model Data install has been completed at the server to complete a Network Installation.
Q. Why can't the workstations access the update CD from the server instead of installing it at each machine?
A. The update CD has more than model data on the disk and must be installed at each machine as well as the server in order for the application to work properly.
Q. Why can't I uninstall one or all of the update CDs without getting an error?
A. Uninstalling one or all of the update CDs using Add/Remove Programs and then installing the latest update CD will not successfully uninstall the program. If the user needs to uninstall the program, the user must uninstall all GEA programs from the Add/Remove Programs list, and then reinstall the base application and the latest update CD.
Q. I tried to install the latest update CD and got an error, "This update is for CD 10..."
A. If a user gets an error message such as "This update is for CD 10..." after installing a recent update CD, it usually means that there has been a loss of power to the machine while running the program or the user has uninstalled monthly CD updates per Add/Remove programs. The user must uninstall all GEA programs from Add/Remove programs, then reinstall the base V4.0 application and install the latest monthly update CD.
Q. It looks like the new program takes up a lot of my hard drive space.
A. Each month the update CD uses a minimal amount of hard drive space. The base application uses about 4.0GB. As of 6.10.08, the drive space used was 4.4GB.
Q. What if I choose to manipulate the V4.0 program to my specifications?
A. Any deviation from the base V4.0 installation and or update CD install instructions will not be supported by the Help desk.
Q. I have a 64 bit machine and just installed the v4.0 program. The program will not run. Why is this?
A. The GEA IPC V4.0 program was built and designed for 32 bit systems only.
